22. July 2021(PresseBox) ( Saterland-Ramsloh, 03.12.20 ) All catalysts have a specific reaction temperature at which the catalytic reactions start and lead to the desired emission reduction effects. Making this reaction temperature as low as possible is the technical challenge for catalysts for wood firing systems, in order to be able to use the catalytic effects very quickly after ignition.
Against this background, the companies Blue Fire GmbH and SCHOTT AG started a cooperation. The aim was to leave more heat in the combustion chamber so that the available heat can be used quickly and comprehensively to heat the Blue Fire catalyst.
For more than 40 years, the company SCHOTT AG has been producing the glass ceramic ROBAX®, which is used as a viewing panel in very many stoves, fireplace inserts, heating and tiled inserts. Based on this technology, SCHOTT has developed the coated glass ceramic ROBAX® IR Max. This ensures that the heat radiation into the installation room of the stove is reduced by a factor of 7 compared to an uncoated ROBAX panel. More heat energy remains in the combustion chamber, which ensures that the furnace heats up more quickly.
With the latest IR SuperMax coating technology, SCHOTT ROBAX® is now setting the course for new standards and complementing its "Smart Heat" IR portfolio. Like ROBAX® IR Max, the new coating radiates a large part of the heat radiation emitted by the fire and embers back into the combustion chamber via the fire viewing panel - 16 times more than an uncoated viewing panel. The international technology group SCHOTT has thus succeeded in drastically improving the reflection performance in the typical wavelength spectrum between 800 and 8,000 nanometres.
The two companies have taken this effect as the basis for their research project in order to use the significantly higher heat in the combustion chamber for rapid and targeted heating of the Blue Fire catalysts. The investigations were carried out on a three-sided glazed stove, among other things. The test set-up was such that a combustion sequence was measured only with Blue Fire catalysts of the Medium type and SCHOTT ROBAX® discs without IR coating. The first alternative test set-up was carried out with ROBAX® IR Max discs. The second alternative test set-up was carried out with ROBAX® IR SuperMax discs.
In the results of the tests, the advantages of the glass ceramic ROBAX® IR Max or ROBAX® IR SuperMax became clearly apparent. The time to reach the reaction temperature of the Blue Fire catalysts is significantly reduced by using SCHOTT ROBAX® IR Max and ROBAX® IR SuperMax discs.
The CO and dust emissions of the fireplace equipped in this way decrease significantly. CO emissions could be almost halved in this case with the combination of SCHOTT ROBAX® IR SuperMax and two Blue Fire catalytic converters integrated into the combustion chamber, compared to equipping with a ROBAX® glass ceramic without an IR coating.
The results are promising and offer very good combination possibilities for the manufacturers of wood-burning appliances to develop innovative and low-emission products and bring them to market.
The combined use of Blue Fire catalysts and SCHOTT ROBAX® IR Max or ROBAX® IR SuperMax panes is particularly advantageous for large glazed fireplaces, such as the currently very trendy 3-sided glazed stoves.
The application of the investigated combination is equally advantageous for stoves that are to be certified according to the Blue Angel standard. The award criteria stipulate that the emission measurements start immediately after ignition and closing of the combustion chamber door.
The CO peak is therefore measured immediately. With the help of SCHOTT ROBAX® IR SuperMax technology and the Blue Fire catalysts that are thus brought up to reaction temperature very quickly, CO and dust emissions can be very specifically reduced shortly after ignition.
This effect can be further increased by using the new Blue Max catalytic coating from Blue Fire GmbH for the catalytic converters. This coating impresses with its high precious metal doping, which ensures that significant CO conversions take place even at low exhaust gas temperatures. With the new coating, up to 30% CO reduction can already be achieved at 150°C.
